AQA AS Level Biology Unit 2 - Adaptation and selection. topic of romeo media, adaptation and selection in unit 2 aqa as level biology. Biology DNA, genetics and evolution AS All boards Created by: Bethan Harris Created on: 24-05-11 20:12. Based Question Essay Answers? Through the romeo media, proces of natural selection organisms adjust to suit the changing environment in which they live. This is known as asaptation. Adaptation increase the long-term reproductive success of a species by helping its members survive long enough to breed. Adaptation and selection are major factors in evolution. As such, they make a significant contribution tothe diversity of catcher rye literary elements, living organisms. One of the most diverse and and juliet, adaptable groups of organisms is bacteria. Their adaptation to a changing environment can be seen in describe that essay, their ability to develop resistance to antibiotics. DNA is the means by which genetic information is passed from generation to generation. Diversity in organism arises from romeo coursework, change to its DNA.

The occur in 2 ways: changing the quantity or sturcture of the effect thesis, DNA of an organism. This is known as mutation recombining the existing DNA of romeo and juliet, two individuals. This occurs during sexual reproduction. As in other organisms DNA is the genetic material in bacteria. Bacteria also increase diversity by changing their DNA in college level essay, a simialr manner to other organisms, namely by mutations and conjugation. Although conjugation recombines the DNA of media coursework, two individuals, it is not strictly sexual reproduction.

Mutations are changes in DNA that result in different characteristics. Mutations arise in many ways For example, one or more bases in a DNA sequence may be added, deleted or replace by other during replication. A tripletof bases on a DNA molecules codes for a single amino acid. Any differences in the base sequence of catcher elements, a DNA molecules may result in a different protein, or no protein at all, being coded for. The differnet amino acid sequence will lead to a different polypeptide, and hence a different protein, or no protein at all, being produced. If this protein is an enzyme it is likely to disrupt the and juliet coursework, metabolic pathway leading to the production of other substances, including proteins. As proteins are responsible for the characteristics of an organism, it follows that change to DNA are likely to alter an organism's characteristics. Conjugation occurs when one bacterial cell transfers DNA to another bacterial cell.

It takes place as follows. One cell produces a thin projection that meets another cell and forms a thing conjugation tube between the two cells The donor vell replicates one of its small circular pieces of DNA (plasmid) The circular DNA is broken to make it linear before it passes along the religion in america essay, tube into the recipient cell Contact between the cells is bried leaving only time for a portion of the donor's DNA is be transferred In this way the recipient acquires new characteristics from the donor cell. In conjugation, DNA in the form of genes can be passed from one species to another species. This is known as horizontal gene transmission . Where genes are passed down from one generation of a species to the next generation of the media coursework, same species, the process known as vertical gene transmission . Antibiotics are substances produced by living organisms. Although most are produced by bacteria, a few, such as penicillin are made by fungi. The term 'antibiotic' is often used more loosely to include synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs that destroy microorganisms. Alexander Flemming 1928 - penicillin.

Antibiotics have proved highly effective in the treatment of bacterial diseases. College Level Essay? One way in which antibiotics work is by preventing bacteria from making normall cell walls. In bacterial cells, as in plant cells, water constantly enters by osmosis. This entry of water would normall cause the cell to burst - a process called osmotic lysis. Romeo And Juliet Media Coursework? This it doesn't burst is college level needs, due to the wall that surrounds the bacterial cells. This wall is made of tough material that is not easily stretched. Romeo And Juliet? A water enters the cell by osmosis, the contents expand and push against the cell wall. Being relatively inelastic, the war document based, cell walla resists expansion and so haalts further entry of water. It therby prevents osmotic lysis. Certain antibiotics kill bacteria preventing them from forming cell walls. Romeo And Juliet? They inhibit the synthesis and assemble of important peptide cross-linkages in college essay needs, bacterial cell walls.

This weakens the walls making them unable to withstand pressure. As a result they are unable to romeo and juliet prevent water entering and so osmotic lysis occurs, killing the religion in america essay, bacterium, As these antibiotics inhibit the proper formation of romeo media, cell walls, ther are only effective when bacteria are growing. Penecillin is an antibiotic that works this way. Viruses have a different covering from bacteria and so are not killed by antibiotics. Based? Shortly after the dicovery of antibiotics it became apparent that the effectiveness of some antibiotics at killing bacteria was reduced, It was found that they populations of bacteria had developed resistance to antibiotics, such as, penecillin. The resistance was due not to a build-up of tolerance to the antibiotic but to a chance mutation within the bacteria.

A mutation is a change withing the DNA that results in and juliet, different characteristics, usually resulting from a change to some protein. In the case of homework template, resistance to penecillin, the mutation resulted in certain bacteria being able to make a new protein. This new protein was an enzyme which broke down the antibiotic penecillin before it was able to romeo media coursework kill the bacteria. The enzyme was given the name penicillinase. It must be stressed that it is not the presence of antibiotics that causes the bacteria to mutate. Mutations occur randomly and homework sheet template, are very rare.

However as there are so many bacteria around the total number of mutations is large. Many of these mutations will be of no advantage to a bacterium. Indeed most will be harmful in which case the bacterium will probably die. Very occasionally a mutation will be advantageous. Even then it dependds upon the circumstances. A mutation that leads to the production of penicillinase is and juliet, only an revolutionary answers advantage when the bacterium is in the presence of romeo media, of penecillin.

If this is the case then the penicillin will kill all the normal bacteria without penicillinase but not the mutant type with penicillinase. Only the mutant individual will survive and divide. This means that the bacteria produced from this survivor could be of the mutant type and will therefore be resistant to penicillin. The gene for penicillinase and hence antibiotic resistance is passesd on from one generation to the next. Religion? i.e by vertical gene transmission. Consequently the resistant form is romeo media coursework, selected for rather than the no resistant form when exposed to penicillin. Every College Level Needs? These penicillin-resistant bacteria therefore gradually predominate in the population. The frequency of the allele for penecillin resistance increase in the population. More significanly the coursework, allele for college level, antibiotic resistance is carried on the small circular loops of DNA called plasmids. Resistance can therefore find its way into romeo media, other bacterial species by horizontal gene transmission.

Horizontal gene transmission can lead to certain bacteria accumulating DNA that gives them resistance to a range of antibiotics. These are so called 'superbugs' New mutation that give bacteria resistance to antibiotics arise randomly all the revolutionary war document essay answers, time however, the more we use antibiotics the media, greater the hall thesis, change that the mutant bacterium will gain an romeo and juliet media advantage ovr the normal variety. In time, and with continued use of in america essay, antibiotic, the and juliet, greater is the chance that the mutant will out-compete and replace the quantum hall graphene thesis, normal variety. One problem for romeo and juliet media, TB is the long period for which the antibiotics must be taken - often 6-9 months. When individual are ill they willingly take the antibiotics as they are keen to recover. The antibiotics initially destroy the least resistant strains of mycobacterium. After a number of months the patients feel better because the vast majority of mycobacterium have been killed. The temptation then is for patients to quantum hall effect thesis consider themselves cured and to stop taking the antibiotics. This is possibly the worst course of action because the few bacteria that remain are those that are most resistant to the antibiotics. The resistant strains of mycobacterium survive, multiply and media coursework, spread to others.

There is therefore a selection pressure that leads to the development of strains of mycobacterium that do not respond to the antibiotic. These strains can then interchange genes for resistance with other strains by catcher conjugation. It is in this way that multiple-antibiotic-resistant strains of TB have developed. To over come the problem a cocktail of three of four antibiotics is used to ensure that at least one will be effective. Health workers often directly observe patients taking these antibiotics in order to ensure that they complete the romeo media, course of treatment.

Many people carry a bacterium belonging to the genus staphylococcus in their throats. Sraphylococcus aureus is a species that cause only thesis, minor health symptoms in healthy individuals. If its becomes a major health risk, it can be cleared up with a treatment of antibiotics. MRSA (methincillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) is the name given to any strain of their bacterium that is resistant to romeo one or more antibiotics, MRSA is especially prevalent in hospitals and can present a particular danger because: people in hospital tend to be older, sicker and homework sheet template, weaker than the general population making them more vulnerable to infection many people live close together and are examined by doctors and nurses who have just touched other patients. This is perfect for the transmissions of infections many antibiotics are used in hospitals and asa aresult any mutant antibiotic resistant strain of bacterium has an advantage over non-mutant strains. With many different antibiotics being used strains can more easily develop multiple resistance to antibiotics. Romeo And Juliet Media Coursework? MRSA is therfore very difficult to treat not least because some strains have developed resistance to almost every known antibiotic. The more widely antibiotics are used, the greater the risk hat resistance will develop. Antibiotic resistance is on the increase for a number of reasons:

Antibiotic are used to treat minor ailments whose symptoms are trivial and/or short lived Antibiotics are sometimes used to treat viral diseases because although they are ineffective against viruses, the may help prevent the development of revolutionary war document essay answers, secondary bacterial infections to which patients may be vulnerable Patients do not always complete the course of antibiotic as prescribed Patients stockpile unused antibiotics from previous prescriptions and then take them later in smaller doses than they should Doctors accept patient's demands for antibiotic treatments even wehn they aren't necessary antibiotics are used to romeo media treat minor ailments in domesticated animal antibiotics are used to prevent disease among intensively reared animal e.g chickens farmers use them to reduce disease in animals. Writing Better University Essays/Referencing. By referencing the sources you use in your essay, you do a number of things. First of all, you comply with an academic convention. Secondly, you make your essay look more professional. Romeo. In fact, it not only looks more professional, but its argument becomes more powerful. Thirdly, you allow others to check your sources. This is often only a hypothetical issue, but a look through the a journey that essay list of your references will allow others to judge your argument quickly. Fourthly, you acknowledge your sources and thus admit that like everyone else, you’re a dwarf on romeo and juliet media coursework the shoulders of the giants. The essential bits of referencing require you to in america essay, provide enough information to and juliet media coursework, others so that they can identify the source. Every College Essay Needs. What exactly is romeo media coursework meant by enough is open to debate, and this is also where conventions come in. Essential is that you do provide references.

Ideally, you would do so properly. In America Essay. It’s not so difficult, and media the sooner you get into the habit of referencing, the elements essay better. There are two forms to do the referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style. In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system.

The Harvard system is also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. You do this by stating the author(s) and the year of the publication you consulted. Where the name of the author occurs naturally in the text, it does not need to be repeated. The references are usually included at the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in romeo and juliet coursework, a place where the text flow is not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. This may be necessary, for example, if only the first half of your sentence is based on someone else’s work.

Switzerland seems to be the ideal place for studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of rye literary elements implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in brackets, together with the year of publication. Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is given, followed by et al. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). If there are very many references to and juliet coursework, an argument, use your own judgement to select the most relevant ones.

What should you reference? Basically references should be included to any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite. Based Essay. However, statements of romeo and juliet coursework general nature need not be attributed to anyone. Quantum. A statement that the romeo media coursework sky is blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the page where you copy from. Religion In America Essay. This is needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so. See the separate section on quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for such a statement, because you have not actually read it. Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant?

The technically correct trick is to add cited in after the reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the work you consulted, and this includes the year of publication. Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the correct year can be helpful. Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the romeo media coursework year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the quantum hall original date.

Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to circumvent this issue is to give both years: the media coursework year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted. Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and homework sheet template ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]). Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in a single year, and media coursework you want to cite more than one of revolutionary war document based essay them. The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the year to identify which of the romeo and juliet media coursework works you refer to. Essay. Use the letter a for and juliet media coursework, the first of your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the quantum hall effect author, followed by the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the end it’s your responsibility that the romeo and juliet coursework references are correct.

Note that a bibliography and list of references is not technically the same. A bibliography is coursework a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in the main text. For books, you put the family name of the author(s) and their initials, followed by the year of homework publication in media, brackets, the title in italics, the place of rye literary publication, and finally the name of the media coursework publisher.

Where you give the romeo coursework editors rather than the actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is only one. The title is capitalized. For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. (eds) (1998) Stability and Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger. Granovetter, M. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand.

Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices , London, Sage. Halsey, A., Heath, A. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press. With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the e-mail address of the sender in sheet, brackets after the name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the author. Media. The subject line of the e-mail is often included as the title. With all forms of personal conversation, the issue of consent is important. It’s always a very good idea to check with the author first. There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the quantum effect thesis average book or journal article. For everything there is romeo and juliet a solution in the academic conventions. If you refer to musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done.

If everything else fails, remember the function of referencing, and provide a reasonable amount of information for others to chase the work. Common problems include the lack of authors, unpublished documents, or lack of revolutionary war document based question answers publisher. Media Coursework. Where there is no author, often there is an organization. Rye Literary. Put the name of the organization. If there is no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the author’s name. Romeo Coursework. For example: IDEA (1998) Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006].

UN Statistics Division (2006) Social Indicators [online], New York, UN Statistics Division, available from: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/inc-eco.htm [accessed 20th February 2006]. Sometimes the year of a document is not known. That You Particularly Essay. Where you have a rough idea, you can put a c before the date, such as in (c.1999). Where you just have no clue, there is no need to panic: simply put the word unknown instead of the and juliet year. Describe That You Particularly Enjoyed Essay. Documents that are unpublished as such, for example a thesis or a draft article you were sent, should come with the media indication that they are not published. In America. This is easily done by including the word unpublished in media coursework, brackets at the end of the reference.

With articles sent to you, you should always ask permission to cite; just like you would with an ordinary e-mail. For theses it’s common to include the kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Where the hall name or place of the publisher is unknown a very simple solution is used: leave the information blank. This is media coursework particularly an issue with internet sites. Including the URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the sheet name of the publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts. Give the name of the and juliet media coursework author, the year in homework template, brackets, the course code if there is coursework one, the course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of material and its title in catcher rye literary elements, single speech marks, place of publication, and publisher. For example:

Peake, S. (2003) U216 Environment , Video 4 ‘Shanghai Boom’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. Romeo Media Coursework. The Open University (2004) DD305 Personal Lives and catcher rye literary essay Social Policy , CD-ROM 2 ‘Interviews and Interviewing’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The capitalization of titles may seem a bit confusing, but it follows a simple logic: it’s the main title that is capitalized. In the case of a book, the main title is that of the book. In the romeo and juliet media case of sheet template journal articles, on the other hand, the main title is thought to be that of the journal itself. Romeo And Juliet Media. It might be confusing that within the journal, the title of an article often is capitalized. Capitalization is not very hard to achieve. Put in homework sheet template, capital letters are all nouns, proper names, the first word, verbs, and adjectives. This is in romeo coursework, fact almost everything. Not put in capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . Unfortunately most word processors don’t capitalize properly when told to, and put every single word in capital letters, including the ands and withins that should not come with capital letters.

Different publishers have different house styles, and you might come across a title with a word you would normally spell differently. This is common with British and American variants, but there are other words, too, such as post-modernity . No matter how strongly you might disagree with the spelling, you should always use the original spelling in the references. It’s perfectly fine to change them in your essay itself, but not in the references. A good manual of describe that essay style, such as the Oxford Style Manual (Ritter, 2003) will be able to give you further guidance. Many course providers have their own preferences or house styles, and it’s advisable to follow these conventions.

Where there are no house styles, using a system such as the one outlined in this guide in a consistent manner will be well received. You’ll find full references to every work mentioned in romeo media coursework, this book at the end. It’s difficult to catcher essay, write about referencing without mentioning plagiarism. Plagiarism describes the act or result where you take the words or ideas of somebody else and romeo and juliet media present them as your own. Plagiarism is college needs considered serious academic misconduct and romeo can be punished severely. Most importantly, however, your reputation is on the line. The origin of the word plagiarism gives you an idea what others will think of rye literary elements you when you plagiarize. The word goes back to romeo media, the Latin plagiarius , a thief and catcher rye literary elements essay kidnapper—in particular a child snatcher and somebody abducting slaves.

The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of reasons why plagiarism occurs. Romeo Coursework. The worst case is deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason). Careless work may lead to elements, plagiarism, but is not commonly considered as severe an offence as the deliberate case. Romeo Media Coursework. Careless work is often a sign of students working too closely to the original, and this can be easily remedied. Without changing your habit, simply by including references to sheet, where you got the and juliet media coursework ideas from, and putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. Question Essay. In practice, you still might rely too much on the original and not deliver as good an essay as you could.

Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly. At the time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the internet, but is romeo and juliet it really worth it? Bear in mind that there is something in for you, too—that is something in addition to the grades. Quantum. The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to the original, there is romeo and juliet media coursework a simple solution: don’t write the essay with the books in front of you.

By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by word. In a way, you force yourself to make the material your own: and that is a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and describe you particularly essay not least, you’ll also get better grades. Romeo And Juliet Media Coursework. Rather than having the original works in front of you, try using your notes. As you still will need to religion, put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. And Juliet Media. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and there is always the search facility in the word processor. By putting a place holder, I can get on quantum graphene with the job of writing without interrupting my thoughts. Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to myself that there is coursework some more work to be done: finding the proper reference, for example. If you think plagiarism is sheet hard to detect by your marker, think again. There are a great number of signs that give plagiarized work away.

Technology-wise, your markers are likely to have the same possibilities than you have if not more. If you can copy and paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is no longer easy to spot. Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the essay yourself. Just to coursework, give you an idea, the markers of your essay will not only have access to the same search engines than you have. There is software to scan essays for duplicates; and many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on the internet where complete essays are sold). The most successful tool, however, is probably the human brain with its incredible ability to remember.

If you copy from a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading. Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is set in the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in quantum hall graphene, style or formatting. And Juliet Media. Many people are unaware of how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is. They are in every college, fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001). Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of words, the romeo coursework kinds of metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the length of sentences, or the use of specialist terms.

Typographic signs include font size, choices of where to break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and things like proper m- and n-dashes (when copying from electronic articles). The presence or lack of references is often an easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in references when copying from electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the level needs internet will very unlikely link well with the rest of your essay. Romeo Media. The style may be inappropriate, or just different. Essays from an essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set. In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by writing freely without having the books right in front of you. Instead, work with your notes, and take care to put references where you use the revolutionary ideas from others. Don’t use the and juliet media internet to religion essay, copy from, no matter how tempting it is.

It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly. Romeo And Juliet Media. Knowing your citations from in america essay your quotations is useful when writing essays. It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. Citations are about ideas you take from others. Quotations are about the and juliet exact words used by others. Homework. This is really the whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is a quotation, because I use the exact same words Blankenhorn did. However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of romeo a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only use the idea, not the exact words. When putting a reference, the homework difference between a citation and a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number.

This is done to enable the reader to coursework, check the words in the original context. In the list of references at the end of the rye literary text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the media coursework main text by religion in america essay, indenting the quotations, and usually putting in a slightly smaller font. And Juliet Media. Longer means about 3 to thesis, 4 lines or more. For example: It is media true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in any of the three dimensions. They may attach greater importance to some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to enjoyed essay, do. Romeo Media. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to copy the words exactly. Sometimes, you might want to change a quote slightly in order to make it fit your essay.

If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and cite the work instead. If the changes are small, use square brackets to indicate that you have changed the revolutionary question essay answers text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in square brackets, leaving the rest the same. This indicates to my readers that the words in square brackets are not the exact same as Rawls used. For reference, the original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in more general terms. Whilst quotations can lighten up an essay, you should not rely on them too much.

Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. The consequence is that the quotations may be relevant in content (what is being said), but in terms of style don’t fit well with what you wrote. If you rely too much on and juliet quotations, you run the catcher risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the romeo and juliet coursework material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an war document based essay extended essay, it’s easiest to media, put the references whilst you write. This is the case, because you still know where you got the idea from.

I keep a place holder to remind myself that a reference is needed if I can’t remember the author right away. Often, I will know at least some of every college level it, and write this down. By putting a place holder rather than chasing the reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing. However, I also indicate that the and juliet media coursework essay is not completed. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the homework sheet template full references once I completed the essay or section. References are needed whenever you write an romeo academic piece of writing. Even where you can get away without referencing, by revolutionary, including references your essay will be taken more serious. It’s a good habit to put references all the time, so when you really need to—such as in your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out and juliet coursework, how to reference a chapter in a book. There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. Every Level Needs. These computer applications interact with your word processor, and automate much of the referencing process.

They manage citations, and and juliet media coursework usually let you search libraries and journal databases. Useful and flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. Rye Literary Elements. It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the and juliet deadline is menacing. For example, make sure you know how to put page numbers for quotations. Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in a separate file. So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file. The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and pasting, without the work of formatting the sheet template reference.

Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of time, too.

How to delete a “blank page” in Word. Users often ask how to get rid of a blank page that is being printed at the end or in the middle of a document. How to approach this problem depends on whether or not the page is actually blank. A simple test will help you decide: Can you see the page? That is, in romeo coursework, Print Layout view or Print Preview, does Word display the empty page? If so, it is enjoyed essay, not really “blank.” Read the next section to find out and juliet how to deal with it.

If the page is not displayed, even in Print Preview, unless you’re displaying facing pages, then the sheet template, page really is “blank” and is being created by and juliet media coursework Word; see “True blank pages.” Important Note: If your problem document is a rsum based on a Microsoft template, skip immediately to “Table at the end of the document.” “Blank” pages that aren’t really blank. Except for sheet template the blank even or odd pages that Word inserts as needed before an Odd or Even Page break (see “True blank pages”), most “blank” pages aren’t really blank. If a page “prints,” it’s because there is and juliet, something on it.

Obviously, that something is invisible to the user. The first line of attack in diagnosing the problem is therefore to make it visible by displaying nonprinting characters. Word 2003 and earlier: Press Ctrl+* or click on the Show/Hide ¶ button on quantum hall thesis the Standard toolbar. Figure 1a. The Show/Hide ¶ button on the Standard toolbar. Word 2007 and above: Press Ctrl+* or click on romeo and juliet the Show/Hide ¶ button in the Paragraph group of the Home tab on the Ribbon. Figure 1b. The Show/Hide ¶ button on the Home tab. When you do this, you’ll suddenly see a lot of markings that may be unfamiliar to you if you’ve never before displayed nonprinting characters (or “formatting marks”).

You can get more information about in america them in the article “Word’s nonprinting formatting marks.” The one you want to concentrate on is the paragraph mark: ¶. Every time you see that mark, it indicates an empty paragraph. Delete all the empty paragraphs and you’ll most likely get rid of your “blank page.” The following sections will explain a few situations in which deleting empty paragraphs will not work or will not suffice. Important Note: Users often believe that a header or footer is causing Word to print an otherwise blank page. And Juliet Coursework. The truth is actually the reverse: the presence of content is causing Word to generate an religion in america essay apparently empty page that has the default header or footer; get rid of what is causing the and juliet coursework, page, and the header/footer will vanish with it. If your problem document is a rsum based on a Microsoft template, it will almost certainly be created using a (borderless) table. In Word 2007 and above, this is easy to homework sheet template diagnose because, when you click anywhere in the document, the romeo and juliet media, contextual Table Tools tab is added to the Ribbon.

In earlier versions, you may have no such clue. Quantum Graphene. To make the table easier to visualize and work with, you need to display the table gridlines (which show the cell boundaries: Word 2003 and earlier: Click View Gridlines on the Table menu. Word 2007 and above: Click View Gridlines in the Table group on the Table Tools | Layout tab. If there is a table at the very end of and juliet coursework, your document (of if, in based essay answers, the case of a rsum, the whole document is a table), Word will insist on having an empty paragraph after the table. You will not be able to delete this paragraph because the paragraph holds the formatting for the entire document (or the romeo media coursework, last section if there is more than one). Describe That You Particularly Enjoyed Essay. The end-of-table marker cannot hold this information because it contains information about the formatting of the table.

If your table completely fills the and juliet coursework, “last” page, the empty paragraph will result in a “blank” page following it. Although you cannot remove this paragraph, you can make it disappear. One way to level essay do this is to make it very small. Select the and juliet coursework, paragraph mark and hall effect graphene thesis, format the font size to 1 point. You may need to make the paragraph line spacing 1 point as well. Usually this will make the paragraph small enough to fit on the previous page.

If it does not, you will need to make the paragraph Hidden (see below). If you make the paragraph Hidden, it will not disappear until you again hide nonprinting characters (by pressing Ctrl+* or clicking the Show/Hide ¶ button). To format the paragraph mark (or any text) as Hidden, select it and press Ctrl+Shift+H ; sometimes this doesn't take for paragraph marks, so you will need to use one of these other methods: Word 2003 and earlier: Click Format on the Menu Bar, then Font ; then check the box for Hidden and click OK . Word 2007 and above: Access the Font dialog by clicking the dialog launcher (small curved arrow) in the bottom right corner of the Font group on the Home tab. Check the box for Hidden and and juliet, click OK . In any version, you will usually find Font… on the context menu if you right-click. Check the box for Hidden and click OK . Blank page in the middle of a document. If your blank page occurs in the middle of a document (and is revolutionary war document based answers, not caused by an Odd/Even Page section break), there is a remote chance that it is caused by a plethora of empty paragraphs, but more often it is the result of a manual page break. This is one reason manual page breaks are discouraged: when formatting changes (either because of editing or because the document is opened on a system using a different printer), the manual page break may immediately follow a natural page break, causing a blank page. Word 2003 and earlier: A manual page break is inserted using Ctrl+Enter or Insert | Break: Page break . Word 2007 and above: A manual page break is inserted using Ctrl+Enter or through the Breaks gallery in romeo and juliet coursework, the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon. In order to religion see a representation of a manual page break, you must display nonprinting characters.

In Word 2003 and romeo, earlier, the break is displayed as a dotted line across the page. Sheet. In Word 2007 and later, it is media, a shorter line. Figure 2a. Religion In America. How a manual page break is represented in Word 2003 and earlier. Figure 2b. How a manual page break is represented in romeo media coursework, Word 2007 and above. Partially blank page in the middle of a document. Sometimes the problem is not an entire page that is level needs, blank but just a large empty space at romeo coursework the bottom of a page that you can’t get Word to fill. If you don’t see a manual page break, the quantum hall graphene, likelihood is that the page break is media coursework, being caused by paragraph formatting.

Whenever a page ends short for no apparent reason, examine the formatting of the paragraph(s) at in america the top of the and juliet coursework, following page to see whether “Page break before” or “Keep with next” is checked. Word 2003 and earlier: Go to Format | Paragraph and select the Line and Page Breaks tab. Word 2007 and above: Access the Paragraph dialog by describe essay clicking on the dialog launcher arrow at the bottom right corner of the Paragraph group on the Home tab of the Ribbon and select the romeo media coursework, Line and Page Breaks tab. In any version, right-click in the paragraph and hall effect thesis, select Paragraph. from the context menu, then select the Line and Page Breaks tab. In any version, if either “Page break before” or “Keep with next” is checked, there will be a small square bullet in the margin next to the paragraph. Double-click on that to coursework open the Paragraph dialog with the quantum hall, Line and Page Breaks tab selected. Figure 3. The Line and Page Breaks tab of the and juliet media, Paragraph dialog in Word 2010. Although “Page break before” or “Keep with next” formatting alone will not result in homework, a blank page, it frequently accounts for a partially empty page and could result in a blank page if the and juliet coursework, “blank” page contains a single paragraph mark formatted as “Page break before,” followed by another “Page break before” paragraph on the next page. Does your document have more than one section?

You can find this out by pressing Ctrl+End (to go to the end of the document) and looking at sheet the status bar. If the number following “Sec” or “Section” is greater than 1, you have more than one section. (In Word 2007 and above, the status bar does not display the section number by default; to media coursework see it, right-click on the status bar and choose Section from the menu.) When your document has more than one section, they are separated by war document essay section breaks. You can see the different kinds of section breaks as follows: Word 2003 and earlier: Click Insert | Break to open the Break dialog. Figure 4a. And Juliet Media Coursework. The Break dialog in Word 2003. Word 2007 and above: Access the Breaks gallery from the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon. Figure 4b.

The Breaks gallery in template, Word 2010. A Continuous section break does not cause a page break. A Next Page break causes the following text to start a new page. An Odd Page break causes the following text to and juliet coursework start a new odd page. If the thesis, text before the break ends on and juliet coursework an odd page, Word will insert a blank even page between the two odd pages. This page is completely invisible to the user (except in question answers, Print Preview with facing pages displayed) but will be “printed” by the printer. Romeo And Juliet Coursework. Similarly, an Even Page break may cause Word to insert a blank odd page. Sometimes a Next Page break will be converted to an Odd Page break.

This frequently happens when a landscape page appears on the back of a portrait one, or vice versa. A Journey That Enjoyed. The reason for this is that most printers really don’t like to print landscape; rotating text and graphics is and juliet media coursework, apparently a more complex operation for every college level them. It seems to be especially difficult for them to and juliet duplex (print both sides of) pages with different orientations. Word accommodates this reluctance by changing Next Page breaks to Odd Page so the printer can print the elements essay, pages on separate sheets. But you don’t have to put up with this laziness; you can make the printer shape up and do what you want! If you find that your Next Page break has morphed into an Odd Page break, don’t make the mistake of trying to delete and reinsert it. This may result in loss of formatting and rarely accomplishes what you want.

Instead, with the insertion point below the section break (in the section that begins with the wrong kind of break), go to romeo and juliet media coursework the Layout tab of Page Setup : Word 2003 and earlier: Use File | Page Setup or double-click at the top of the horizontal ruler. Select the describe a journey enjoyed, Layout tab. Word 2007 and above: Access the Page Setup dialog by clicking the dialog launcher arrow at the bottom right corner of the Page Setup group on the Page Layout tab or double-click at the top of the romeo and juliet media, horizontal ruler. Describe A Journey That Enjoyed Essay. Select the Layout tab. Change the “Section start” back to romeo media “New page.” Figure 4. The Page Setup dialog showing the Section start dropdown. Important Warning: Another situation in which Word may change a Next Page break to Odd Page can be much more insidious. If you are restarting numbering in each section (so that the first page of each section is 1), and you have either Mirror margins or Different odd and even (headers and footers) enabled (or possibly even if you don't), Word will assume that you are intending to duplex the revolutionary war document based question answers, document and romeo media, will force an Odd Page break because it knows that page 1 is an odd page, and it will insist that the describe a journey enjoyed, odd page be printed on the front (recto) side of a sheet. What makes this situation particularly insidious is that the and juliet, Layout tab of Page Setup may still show the break as New page, and the section break marker may still say Section Break (Next Page), but the next page will be a recto one, preceded by a blank verso (even) page if necessary.

This can be especially difficult to that you particularly enjoyed essay troubleshoot if the coursework, document is one you did not create, even more so if the page number is not displayed (printed) on catcher rye literary the page, so that you may not realize that numbering has been restarted. The most disastrous result of all this, however, is that, despite the fact that, in your view, the media, new section begins with page 1, Word considers that preceding blank page part of the new section, so if you try to use Page X of Y numbering in that section, you will get a Y value that is religion, one larger than the and juliet media coursework, last page number; for example, in a section with pages numbered 1 to 6, you'll get Page 1 of 7, Page 2 of 7, all the way to Page 6 of question essay, 7 on the last page. Whether this is an argument against restarting numbering or against using Page X of Y or just against not trying to combine them with an Odd Page section start I leave it to you to decide! Helpful Tip: You may well be using Odd Page breaks intentionally and want to be able to see the blank pages that Word inserts. Romeo Media. These pages are never displayed in Print Layout view, but you can see them in Print Preview if you have more than one page displayed.

The problem is that Word shows pages 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, and so on. If you are laying out a book and that you particularly enjoyed, want to see true facing pages (1 alone, then 2 and 3, and so on), these conditions must be met: You have enabled either “Mirror margins” (on the Margins tab of Page Setup ) or “Different odd and even” (on the Layout tab of Page Setup or in the Options group on the Header Footer Tools | Design tab in romeo media, Word 2007 and above), and. You display two or more pages in religion essay, Print Preview. Although you can display multiple pages on romeo and juliet the Print tab of the every college essay, Backstage in Word 2010 and above (by reducing the and juliet media coursework, Zoom), you may prefer the classic Print Preview, which can be accessed by adding Print Preview Edit Mode to the Quick Access Toolbar. Blank pages not caused by Word at all. If you are getting a blank page at the end of every document you print and that enjoyed, have exhausted all other explanations, check the romeo and juliet media coursework, printer Properties to see whether there is a “separator page” option that has been enabled.
